“ ‘A Fortnight in the Wilds’ was first published by Beaumont in the Revue des Deux Mondes of 1st December 1860, before appearing in the 1st volume of Œuvres et Correspondance inédites which subsequently made up volume 5 of his Œuvres Complètes (pp. 173-258).
The Tocqueville archives have an autograph manuscript and a copy of the same revised and corrected by Tocqueville himself.
It is that copy which is used here; Tocqueville had only changed some details of style in his original draft.
“The journey took place between the 18th and 29th July 1831.
There is a first version of the story in the diary for that time in pocket notebook 2, pp. 132-143.
