Key to the Tables
Population figures for the nations in the above tables were obtained from CIA 2002
World Factbook
national population estimates with regard to July 2002 (2002-07).
The first “2001 GDP” column was obtained (for nations) from the 2002 World Factbook's national “Purchasing Power Parity” indexed GDP estimates for the year 2001.
The following “2001 GDP” (exchange rate) column was obtained (for nations, the state of California, and Los Angeles County) from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation
(LAEDC),
which derived it from OECD and IMF data.
See
this link
for LAEDC economist George Huang's letter describing LAEDC's procedure, and
this
for their table laying out the results.
Neither the U.S. Census Bureau nor Bureau of Economic Analysis have yet released year 2001 population or Gross State Product figures for the individual states, so the previous year's data will continue to be used until more recent information becomes available.
Population figures for U.S. states were obtained from current U.S. Census Bureau
estimates
with regard to July 1, 2001 (2001-07-01); see items flagged with a dagger † in the tables.
GDP data (other than the LAEDC column) for U.S. states was derived from currently available Bureau of Economic Analysis
“Gross State Product”
figures
with regard to the year 2000; see items flagged with a double dagger ‡.
A number of non-state or sub-state entities do not appear in the CIA World Factbook, U.S. Census, or Bureau of Economic Analysis reports.
The main source for information about non-state entities in this series of tabulated data has been Encyclopædia Britannica (CD 1997); items from Britannica are flagged with an asterisk * in the tables, whereas data computed from its sources gets two asterisks **.
A major source of information concerning extraterrestrial bodies has been the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and related organizations such as the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
These sources are flagged in the tables with a dagger-double dagger symbol †‡.
Information derived from other sources is flagged with two double daggers ‡‡.
The GDP for California's Los Angeles County in Table 1, column 5, was obtained from LAEDC's table of world economies, previously noted; this item is also flagged with two double daggers ‡‡.
